— Innovative Therapy Reduces Patient Burden, Improves Patient Experience —
Peyton Neatrour, M.D. has announced that Beach Eye Care is now offering a new treatment option for patients undergoing cataract surgery that reduces or eliminates the need for costly prescription eye drops. Beach Eye Care is the first and only practice in Virginia to perform Dropless Cataract Surgery™. The time-released medication administered during surgery provides convenience and cost-savings for patients, while alleviating compliance concerns for practitioners.
While patient outcomes and satisfaction are high following cataract surgery, the post-operative eye drop regimen is often the most difficult aspect of the procedure. In addition to the need to follow a strict dosing schedule, eye drops often cost hundreds of dollars, resulting in financial burden. Dropless Cataract Surgery may reduce or eliminate the high cost of prescription medications routinely prescribed, while providing a simpler, less complex recovery.
Traditionally, patients who undergo cataract surgery must adhere to an eye drop schedule that includes several types of drops used for three to four weeks. These drops reduce the risk of inflammation and infection, and are a critical part of ensuring successful outcomes. However, complications arise when cataract patients miss a scheduled dose, are physically unable to instill the drops, have to rely on the availability of a caregiver to administer the drops or when the high cost precludes the purchase of the prescribed drops.
During Dropless Cataract Surgery, a sterile, compounded formulation of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication is deposited in the back of the eye (the vitreous). The time-released delivery of the drugs helps fight infection and inflammation during the recovery period. Administering the medication at the time of surgery eliminates concerns about patient compliance associated with the traditional eye drop regimen.
“The emergence of Dropless Cataract Surgery represents a watershed for ophthalmology, as we bring this best-in-class practice to Beach Eye Care,” said Dr. Neatrour. “When I introduced Dropless cataract surgery to Virginia in February, 2016, the goals were to place sustained release antibiotics and steroids in the most effective location in the eye to prevent infection and control inflammation with the least drops…tears only or a once daily non-steroid anti-inflammatory in diabetic and macular disease patients. Other significant positives are less expense for patients where the prescription medications in drop form can cost $200-300 and contribute to dryness with 50+ preserved drops placed on the eye over a month. Patient compliance becomes a non-factor in remembering to use their drops.”
The office staff appreciate lessening the #1 call from patients re eye drop too expensive or not available on their pharmacy plan. The side effect of cloudy vision for 1-2 days while the medicine in’s dispersing and the 1/30 chance of a hemorrhage that clears over 6 days are easily tolerated. Dropless is an incredible advantage as we have seen in our first 100 patients in many ways and it is here to stay. The introduction of this important treatment option helps us reach the ultimate goal for our patients – better vision without complications and a positive patient experience.”

About Cataract Surgery Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States with over three million procedures performed annually. A cataract is the clouding of the natural clear lens in the eye, resulting in hazy vision, unusual glare, poor night vision, and a reduction in color perception. During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is removed, and then replaced with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
