Appalachia Service Project

"Rejuvenating" is the word that comes to mind as I describe my second trip as a member of the Appalachia Service Project to Hinton, West Virginia. Working with the youth of Community United Methodist Church and helping others in need has a way of cleansing the soul and recharging the heart. I joined 34 others, including 25 youth 14-25 years old, forming five teams of seven each. My team worked on the 75 year- old home of an EMT/volunteer firefighter with a heart condition, who could not do the work himself. September is Sports Eye Injuries Prevention Month
Top Ways to Prevent Sports Related Eye Injuries
  • Keep street eyewear off the playing field; they do not meet the minimum requirements for impact resistance. Sport eyewear offers superior impact resistance and eye protection.
  • Increase your performance on the playing field by wearing prescription protective eyewear.
  • Contact lenses may have some degree of UV protection, but offer no protection from impact. Wear sunglasses and polycarbonate lenses when participating in sport activities to protect your eyes from the harmful sun rays as you protect against impact.
  • Many sports have official standards for safety equipment. Some clubs today go so far as to require their members to wear proper eye gear to participate.

Sports in which balls, racquets, or flying objects are present pose a potential for eye injury. Overall, basketball and baseball cause the most eye injuries, followed by water sports and racquet sports.

"Beach Eye Care, from Dr. Neatrour to the entire staff, is the finest, most professional medical organization. I have ever dealt with. Since my procedure about 3 months ago, my vision has improved to 20/25 in both eyes. I look forward to continued visual improvement and my new relationship with Beach Eye Care."
